Traveling the Great Wide Open
Joe Petropolous |
These days, Joe and Brenda Petropolous are experiencing life in a whole new way. They're traveling therapists on assignment for Medical Methods, which means they're living in their RV traveling around the great state of Florida. Their current assignments-both in Orlando-have Joe working as a PTA in a 180-bed skilled nursing facility while Brenda, COTA, is working at an assisted living facility. They're in complete agreement about how much they enjoy their new lifestyle and the variety of work options it offers.

Joe and Brenda had been planning their career as travelers for two years, and when it came time to decide what travel company to go with, it was an easy decision for them. Joe had talked with another therapist, who referred Medical Methods. "You can trust what other therapists have to say about travel companies and their experiences," said Joe. "I trusted my contact, so I gave Medical Methods a call. The rest is history."
Most therapists know about the travel opportunities in their chosen fields. Healthcare traveling has been a hot industry for nine or ten years, according to Joe. "You hear about the glamour and money, and we wanted to give it a try," he said. And he couldn't be happier with his opportunities for travel; he values his relationship with the folks at Medical Methods for the support they provide to him and Brenda. "The entire staff is professional and go the extra mile. My recruiter Dean Medley even called me on my birthday to wish me a good day," said Joe. "Plus, I know if I ever have any issues with my job or contract and Dean can't help me, I can call and talk with Clint or Chad, the owners. That is reassuring."
The benefits of traveling are personal as well as professional. Joe and Brenda like the idea that they can be with their family while still working. "We have three kids and our grandchildren are here in Florida; that's why we chose to stay in the state.for now anyway," said Joe.
Joe admits the traveling lifestyle is very different from his past career. "Traveling is a big change, but I like it. You just have to get used to a different way of life," he said. "It is a lot different knowing that I can't tinker with the house; Brenda and I both enjoyed home improvement projects. But now we find new projects, and we do have friends that are RV'ers, so we always have encouragement."
The flexibility and frequency of change is another big benefit for the Petropolouses. "Most work contracts are thirteen weeks. I can handle any assignment for that length of time," said Joe. "And if we are really enjoying where we are we can always extend the contract. It's a great situation." |
