Thank You... For the Thank You Letter
I've been recruiting for over a decade and over the years the number of thank you letters that I have received has gradually reduced to almost nothing. In the internet age and the fast paced job market, there are sometimes countless therapists jockeying for the same position. To actually have an interview is an experience that many therapists take for granted.
To make the most of the after-interview stage, always send a personalized thank you letter to anyone that takes the time to interview you. I'm a fan of the hand-written note method but take into consideration the "personality" of the organization and the rapport that you felt during the interview. Most therapy interviews are informal so the hand written note method is fine. Sometimes in the transactional contract and travel therapy world it may be more realistic to go with email. Either way, writing a thank you letter is a must! Not only does it indicate that you are unusual but that you are sincerely interested in the position. It shows follow through on your part and a level of professionalism that simply can't be matched.
Make sure that your thank you letter uses the same heading as your resume and initial cover letter to maintain consistency in your approach. After all, your resume got you the interview, didnít it? Keep the content of the thank you letter brief, and mention only the highlights. This will remind the interviewer of your skills and qualifications and what you bring to the table.
Finally, if there were some things that you forgot to mention during the interview, such as your ability to work extra hours when the situation demands it, or your willingness to take on additional responsibilities, a thank you letter provides you with the perfect opportunity.
Until next month–
